Indie Author Tip #1: Success is an amalgamation of many tiny goals

I started my indie author journey with a simple goal: to see the story I'd been working on for almost 10 years (on and off) as a physical book.

I didn't want the fame.

I didn't want the money.

Would either of those things be cool to have? I mean, I'm not going to turn my nose up at an amazing opportunity.

But success is an amalgamation of many tiny goals.

What I mean by that is, success is a self-defined term. My first idea of success was holding my book in my hand. When I reached that goal, my next goal was to get my first review. Then to sell my first book to someone that wasn't my mom (love you Momma!). But every baby step I took to get where I am today was a collection of small goals I set for myself and achieved.

If I had set my definition of success as "making lots of money" or "going viral on Booktok," I would be a very sad little indie author.

Set the bar low enough to obtain, and when you reach that goal set another one a couple steps ahead. Because an impossible goal is not a goal at all.

It's a mirage.
